Frequently Asked Questions
Why a Hass Avocado?
The Hass avocado is a cross between a Mexican and Guatemalan variety. It was introduced in California by Rudolph Hass in 1926. It has become the most commercially popular avocado worldwide due to its creamy taste, size, and yield. The mother tree lived for 76 years.
How tall do they grow?
Outside, the tree can grow from 15 to 20 feet, but inside in a container, they will grow from 5 to 7 feet. If you grow it as a house plant, locate it near a window so it can get exposure to light. By pruning it back, you can potentially increase production.
What conditions are best for growing Hass Avocados?
The avocado prefers rich topsoil with good drainage and full sunlight. It has done exceptionally well in southern California. Its growing zone is ideally suited for zones 9 to 11. Planting outdoors is risky in Zone 8, as winters are unpredictable. It makes an ideal patio tree from zone 4 to 11. Consult the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.
Will Hass Avocados grow in zone 8?
The avocado prefers rich topsoil with good drainage and full sunlight. It has done exceptionally well in southern California. Its growing zone is ideally suited for zones 9 to 11. Planting outdoors is risky in Zone 8, as winters are unpredictable. It makes an ideal patio tree from zone 4 to 11. Consult the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.
What are the benefits of growing indoors?
Besides protecting the tree from the cold, the tree is helping improve the quality of your life! The trees absorb the CO2 and emit oxygen, acting as a filter for the air you breathe. As a patio tree, you can roll it outside in the spring and summer, and bring it back inside with the first sign of frost.
Do the trees fertilize themselves?
Yes, but by getting two, you greatly increase the chance of getting a stronger yield.
How long to bear fruit?
Our trees are grown from seeds that are produced from Hass Avocado trees. There are a lot of factors that affect the quantity and quality of the fruit, so we make no guarantees. For example, periodic fertilizer can enhance production and growth. Avocado trees love sunshine, rain, and rich well-draining topsoil. Trees can begin fruiting from 3 to 8 years as there are many variables. Zone 8 is the lowest zone you can plant. Even in zone 8, we recommend growing the tree on the patio or a greenhouse, where you can bring it inside if it drops below 30 degrees. It is a potentially rewarding return for a modest investment! Grow a tree, save the earth!
Should I fertilize?
A citrus fertilizer is ideal as these fertilizers generally have a higher nitrogen (N) ratio.
Avocados like trace elements like zinc.
Dont over-fertilize. Coffee grinds are popular to add to indoor plants! Rich compost mixed with existing soil gets the tree off to a good start!
What size pot do I need for my indoor avocado tree?
Give an indoor plant room for its roots to grow. A 24-inch pot (15 to 25 gallons) is ideal, but it needs to drain. Terracotta containers are porous, making them ideal for ensuring drainage. A tray under the pot can hold excess water that will evaporate or be absorbed by the tree.
How do you ship?
UPS ground and the tree comes with the roots secured inside a 9-in pot.
